30th January 2016

I called 111 on 30/01/2016 for my 4 year old son whom I was worried about. He had a fever, sore throat, wheezing and his breathing was very fast. I called at about 2.30am and I was informed a doctor would call back within the hour. While waiting for this call my son coughed a few times and it really scared me because he was really struggling for breath, but I told myself not to worry because a doctor will soon ring. He fell asleep and his breathing seemed to improve. When the doctor finally rang at 4.15am he asked if I would like to take Alfie to hospital now or wait until morning. I decided that as he was having a good sleep and that actually morning was not many hours away we would wait until later. I asked what time we should go to hospital and he said 8.30am. This was fine by me. We arrived at hospital at 8.20, Alfie breathing quickly again and with a fever. The receptionist told me that they do not start appointments until 9am (apparently this happens a lot). This then meant I had to sit in a hospital waiting room for 40 minutes with an unwell 4 year old who is already nervous about being in hospital, the wait only made it worse for him. Why did I have to wait approx 95 minutes for a doctor to call - should I have just called an ambulance? I had said I thought he severely unwell. Why does a doctor make an appointment for us at the time he is going off duty and no other doctor available?

Initial phone call answered immediately. Follow up return call very soon afterwards. Kind calm Doctor gave me various options for seeing a member of the medical staff. I chose to drive myself in from Sedbergh to Kendal and was seen straightaway by nurse practitioner (Ian Roberts??). Prescribed medication has worked very well to date thankfully and now I know that I can receive such good attention on a Bank Holiday Monday I am reassured about any future occasions. Many thanks

I was called back, with an appointment really quickly. Once I arrived everything was on time. The doctor was lovely. I am extremely grateful to have been able to see a doctor out of usual hours.
